Landmark On Main Street

Loc. in: Port Washington, NY

Jeanne Rimsky Theater History Located in Port Washington, Nassau County, New York, Landmark on Main Street is a community-based presenter of world-class arts and cultural programs for audiences of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds. Through our diverse programming, we "enhance the spirit of the community" for our neighbors on Long Island, in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and beyond. Built in 1908, this historic building was originally the Main Street School where thousands of Port Washington students were educated until it closed in 1985. A grassroots movement saved the building from demolition and transformed it into a multipurpose community center that opened in 1995. Landmark is a vital and beloved community resource. Currently, Landmark is also home to the Port Washington Youth Council's Teen Center, the Port Washington Children's Center, and the Parent Resource Center that all provide vital services to families in the area. Landmark also houses the Doctors' Gymnasium which is used by these organizations and can also be rented by the public. We present 35 to 40 programs each year in the beautiful 425-seat Jeanne Rimsky Theater. Folk, Broadway/Cabaret, Roots Rock, and World Music are at the heart of our programming, complemented by the Children's Series. Landmark has hosted sold-out performances by top Broadway and cabaret stars: Lucie Arnaz, Christine Ebersole, Sutton Foster, Maureen McGovern, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Jane Monheit, Kelli O'Hara, Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp as well as icons of the Folk, Rock and World Music worlds: The Bacon Brothers, David Bromberg, Jonatha Brook, Buckwheat Zydeco, Judy Collins, Shawn Colvin, Justin Townes Earle, Steve Earle, Alejandro Escovedo, Lesley Gore, Richie Havens, Janis Ian, Rickie Lee Jones, Lucy Kaplansky, Jorma Kaukonen, Ben E.
